This topic is for discussion of "Overview: The 2nd Generation Flip MinoHD," from the "Secrets of the Flip HD Camcorders" series. The 2nd Generation Flip MinoHD introduces a new look -- a brushed aluminum case with softer edges -- but otherwise combines features from its predecessors, the 1st Generation Flip MinoHD and the Flip UltraHD. So the video, rather than detailing lots of new features, concentrates on the factors that separate these three camcorders.

Which Flip best 4 my purpose?

Hi Darrell...everyone,

First, congratulations on your wonderful site -- & thanks for it! What a relief when I found you (via Twitter, here's me http://twitter.com/JoyceSchneider1)

My main purpose for the Flip will be making videos for YouTube (me giving cooking lessons), & uploading them. The Flip's gen 2 bigger screen sounds like a huge advantage over the others, but that aside...which Flip would you recommend to me?

One worry: I've heard that Flip's edit software sometimes harms Word...? Is it true? I use a Mac Os 10.5.8 & Firefox 3.5.4.

Many thanks!

Joyce

Which Flip, etc.

Hi, Joyce... Welcome aboard!

Here's what I know, and what I think I know:

  • I know of nothing about FlipShare harming Word.  I'm a Windows user, but I use both FlipShare and Word without issue. If you can point me to a source of information about the problem, I'll try to check it out.  (It's possible it's a Mac thing, but I think I would have heard about it.)
  • Currently, Flip Mino-HD and Flip Ultra-HD are being shipped with FlipShare 4.5.  This version of FlipShare -- if you use it's upload-to-YouTube feature -- doesn't upload in a quality sufficient to get you an HD rating on YouTube.  That was disconcerting to me:  Why bother getting an HD camcorder and make it so hard to actually watch it in HD?
  • The 2nd Generation Flip Mino-HD that I got for review purposes has FlipShare 5.0, which touts the ability to preserve HD when uploading to YouTube.  This version hasn't been released to the public yet, but should be soon.  I haven't been able to test the premise, yet, because I'm having a problem making movies with this version.  This is a bug that they will get worked out, and when they do I'll feel more free to describe using it.
  • With a Mac, none of this should concern you, if you use iMovie to edit your clips into a movie, and upload a Quicktime movie to YouTube.  I'm pretty sure you can get full Hi Def without doing anything special.

As for which one to buy, watch the third segment of my series, which introduces the 2nd Generation Flip MinoHD, but also shows a feature comparison of all three models, shows the difference that the larger LCD screen makes, and shows side-by-side video comparison of all three models.  It should get you all the trade-offs and information you need to make a choice.

You can watch that here: Overview: The 2nd Generation Flip MinoHD

Given that you're responding in this forum topic, it's possible that you have already watched it. (Do watch it full screen to get a better feel for the differences.)  Have I answered your questions?

Thanks for the kind words!

Darrell

p.s.  If you do decide to buy a Flip, and if Amazon gets you the best price, we make a few bucks if you get to Amazon from our site -- perhaps using the Amazon search box in the right column of our home page.  Every little bit helps! :)
